Staci Keanan, known for her role as Dick Butkus’ co-star on the 1980s NBC sitcom “My Two Dads,” is sharing heartfelt memories of the late football legend after his passing at the age of 80.
Keanan expressed her condolences, saying, “I’m so sorry to hear that Dick has passed away. He was such a gentle, sweet, quiet man.” She exclusively shared her thoughts with PEOPLE.
Despite Butkus’ reserved nature, Keanan recalled his surprising sense of humor during their time working together on the sitcom. She mentioned a distinctive detail about Butkus, noting, “He wore Birkenstocks back when we worked together — they weren’t trendy then — it seemed to be because he had pain from his football days, and when he walked, he seemed to be in chronic pain. But he never complained about it.”
Keanan also reminisced about an episode of “My Two Dads” that featured a highlight reel from Butkus’ character’s football career. To her amazement, this reel included footage from his actual NFL career. She marveled at how the “gentle giant” she knew could deliver those massive tackles and sacks on the football field.
“My Two Dads” aired from September 1987 to April 1990, and it portrayed an unconventional family dynamic. The show followed two men, Michael Taylor (Paul Reiser) and Joey Harris (Greg Evigan), who both loved the same woman and raised her daughter together after her passing.
Butkus played a recurring role as diner owner Ed Klawicki, a former football player.
In an interview with Chicago’s WGN 9 in October 2022, Butkus shared insights into his transition into acting after his football career ended. He spoke about finding his second passion in life and acknowledged feeling blessed and lucky to have the opportunity to pursue acting.
Dick Butkus passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Malibu home, according to a statement from the Butkus family. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children, Ricky, Matt, and Nikki.
